In order to help students improve their learning ability, scientific innovation awareness and pave the way for the university life and future development plan, College of International Collaboration (Houston International Institute) has meticulously created a series of lectures on students’ growth leading activities “HII knowledge and practice lecture”. This semester, the “Peers talk about the world” and “Teachers speak of new words” of HII knowledge and practice lecture opened on September 29th and October 13th respectively. Relevant leaders, instructors and part of students participated in the activities.
In the lecture on “Things about College Students’ Scientific Innovation” of the “Peers talk about the world” part of HII Zhixing lecture, Jin Zheqi and Wang Xiaohang, senior students of the College of Transportation Engineering, answered the students’ doubts about college students’ participation in scientific and technological innovation activities, and helped them understand the matters related to college students’ scientific innovation competition. Under the guidance of “Where to find scientific innovation” and “How to conduct scientific innovation” as the focal point of the lecture, they introduced the differences among various competitions, analyzed the characteristics of individual competitions and group contest in details, and encouraged everyone to expand their knowledge, enrich their experience, make friends and develop their literacy through scientific research and scientific innovation competitions.
In the lecture on “Undergraduate Academic Career Planning Based on the Status quo of Overseas Studies in the Epidemic Era” of the “Teachers speak new words” section of HII Zhixing Lecture, the college invited Gao Xiaowei, a doctoral candidate of Spacetime LAB of University College London (UCL), to share. Based on the current situation of studying abroad under the background of the pandemic, Gao explained the planning of undergraduate academic career. Starting with matters needing attention in college life”, he analyzed the characteristics of the students’ college life. He also carefully analyzed the advantages of students in Houston International Institute from the following aspects: recommendation for graduate students, postgraduate examination, application for overseas graduate students and job hunting. Among them, Gao focused mainly on explaining the relevant information about overseas postgraduate study and postgraduate guarantee, and encouraged everyone to clarify their future goals as soon as possible. At the end of the lecture, Gao patiently answered the questions posed by the students.
The successful HII Zhixing lecture helped students sort out confusions about scientific innovation of college students and undergraduate academic career planning based on the current situation of studying abroad in the epidemic era, provided students with rich practical experience, created a strong learning atmosphere, and effectively promoted the construction of a decent study style of the College of International Collaboration (Houston International Institute).
