For the sake of stimulating students’ interests and enthusiasm in learning English, enriching students’ second English classroom and helping students utilise English better, on the evening of June 18, Houston International Institute held a salon with the theme of “Tapping the Door of English Learning”. The salon invited Wang Hua from College of foreign languages, Dalian University of Technology, as the keynote speaker. Zhang Jinlei, Dean of the HII, had made her presence as well. The responsible teachers and key members of “HII newsletter” attended the salon.

Wang Hua first introduced four words “motivation”, “method”, “perseverance” and “satisfaction” to analyse the misunderstandings that students were prone to make in the course of English learning. Then, by means of interactive Q & A session, she elaborated on “listening”, “speaking”, “reading” and “writing” in English learning. Among them, “can you really read these words?” “Chinglish: etiology, diagnosis and treatment”, “the magic of causative verbs” and other sections were subtlety designed, which aroused the strong interest among students.

The salon has an obvious enlightening effect on the students to learn and use English well, and has stimulated the students’ initiatives in English learning. As an important part of the “HII knowledge and practice lecture” featured by “Heartfelt Messages from Teachers”, the success of this activity plays a very crucial role in developing the activity of students’ English “second classroom” and cultivating innovative talents with solid professional foundation, international vision and proficient application of English.
